    Newton cleared to play

INDIANAPOLIS -- Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is eligible to play in the SEC title game this weekend, even though the NCAA says his father broke rules by shopping his son to another school.

The NCAA released its finding in a statement Wednesday. The college sports governing body had concluded on Monday that a violation of Newton's amateur status had occurred. Auburn declared Newton ineligible on Tuesday and requested his eligibility be reinstated.
Newton has been cleared to compete without conditions.
Auburn (No. 1 BCS, No. 2 AP) plays South Carolina (No. 19 BCS, NO. 18 AP) in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday. With a victory, the Tigers will earn a spot in the BCS National Championship Game.

What am I missing? What does a sportscenter commercial where big blue eats a green jacket have to do with Newton?

By the time I put that you had fixed it.

Notice the way that's worded too. It said he "broke rules by shopping his son to another school". The **** hits the fan when it comes out that he took money. That's when Auburn goes 0-14 and goes on probation. This is FAR from over.

    Re: Newton cleared to play

No one knows exactly what the deal is with all of this just yet.. But, even if money did change hands and was used to fix a church, who's to say it wasn't in the form of a donation to a non-profit (church) from someone not related to the school in any way themselves? I think if anything comes out, this is most likely what you will get..and in that form (not money given directly to the Newtons). And, if that's the case it'll be hard to prove any more than has already been proven..especially if the money never had the Newton's name on it at any point. That's just a possibility, but that's a strong possible outcome to all of this.
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....

    Re: Newton cleared to play

when (or if I guess, but its pretty much a done deal that Cecil took money I think) they can prove that Cecil Newton took money, all this mess gets validated.

I hope for Cam's sake that his dad really did not take money; I seriously doubt it, and I think its ridiculous to assume taht Cam knew nothing about his dad shopping him around, but I hope he gets cleared.

but if he did, Cam will be ineligible, and AU will be knee deep in a big pile of NCAA

Why do people watch? Really, two of the last three great college players (Newton, Bush, Young) are cheats. NCAA football is a fraud and the people who follow it religiously are puppets.

The AJC reported that the church lost its non-profit status a couple years ago.....

I do agree with you though about no one knowing what all is involved in this. It is just hard for people to believe that Cam didn't know anything about the Money deal when he told Miss St. coaches that the Money was to good at Auburn. And honestly it doesn't matter if Auburn paid him or not. The solicitation of Money by a parent is a violation.

They suspended Damon Stoudimire in 95 for his dad accepting a plane ticket. They suspended Dez Bryant last year for talking to an agent. They have a track record that shows in most case's ,somewhat similar to this, of suspending players till it is cleared up. The difference in this case is Auburn is undefeated and will probably play for a national championship. But even with all that. I think it could all be cleared up if Cecil Newton would just explain where he got the money to get his church up to code. But no one ever explains that. That is why most people see him as guilty and honestly that makes Auburn look guilty as well....

No, the difference is that the school he is attending, Auburn, was not mentioned in any of the pay-for-play news that broke. If he went to Miss. State, he would be ineligible right now. But he went to Auburn, so those restrictions do not apply.

This rule is as such because of Memphis DT Albert Means, a name Im sure you and a few others will remember.
